Johan Museeuw
Cobbled Credentials Again Please?
A true Lion of Flanders resume, with three wins each in Paris-Roubaix and Flanders. A total of 14 podiums between the two races. He also won E3 twice and the Omloop once, as well as several KBKs, Dwars, etc.
Tournament Mojo
Drawing Jan Ullrich's coach in the first round didn't hurt. Museeuw isn't that popular but his credentials are undeniable.
Peter Van Petegem
Cobbled Credentials Again Please?
Best known for his Flanders-Roubaix Double in 2003, Van Petegem was a cobbles specialist in an era of increasing specialty. He won another Flanders title earlier (1999), plus an E3 Prijs and three editions of the Omloop Het Volk (as it was then known).
Tournament Mojo
Rode his magic facial hair and Brakel roots to an upset of Eric Leman in round 1.
This matchup features the only semi-modern clash of contemporaries, so you might actually look to real life for help in deciding. It's also a bit insider-vs-outsider, Mapei vs the guy leading whichever team was desperately trying to keep up with Mapei. I haven't watched a lot of those late-90s/early 2000s battles but you needn't study the film to know that Museeuw's Mapei squad held all the cards.
