In a race that stayed together for a long time Dan Martin finished off a nice bit of Garmin-Sharp teamwork. Ryder Hesjedal made the big serious attack on the new Colonster climb and as the the chase formed behind an elite group formed. Hesjedal was unable to stay away and was caught on the Saint Nicolas where the winning break of six riders formed and sped towards Ans. Astana's Vincenzo Nibali led the chase behind for teammate Gasparotto and with pre-race favorite Gilbert sitting on hoping to get a second chance in the race. The chase was outpowered though and could only just catch the stragglers from the break.
After getting caught Hesjedal drove the group for teammate Martin until Joaquin Rodriguez set in a successful attack to get rid of Valverde, the dominant sprinter in the group. Martin was the only one strong enough to bridge and he only briefly sat on J-Rods wheel before counter-attacking and riding away for his first win in a Monument.
