It was an absurdly muddy day in Namur, the famed fortified city in the heart of the real Ardennes (geologically speaking). The Citadelcross, celebrating this photogenic town (a prominent spot on La Fleche Wallonne's parcours) and its famed fortifications, is one of the World Cup's premier events, which is to say it's about as cool a race as there is in the world, non-Koksijde category.

And our own Patrick Verhoest was there, camera and all. Braving the flu. Because as he says, the rest of this week is second to Namur. These pictures need little discussion. I'll toss in the names, but otherwise... welcome to the shitshow!

Katie Compton, victorious on the day, lines up for a slippery descent:

Vos riding in what appears to be molten chocolate.

Chaser Katerina Nash, not looking too joyful:

Katie got it done in the slop. With Logan Owen's win in the Juniors category, this was a good day for the USA.

On to the men. Jonathan Page was 15th on the day, the top American, thanks no doubt to half a lifetime spent in Flanders.

Awe-inspiring setting and some interesting faces grace the Euro CX circuit in France

This weekend may not be the most season-defining of the cyclocross calendar, but it will definitely be... colorful. It kicks off with the Tom Boonen invitational, and if you're saying to yourself "but he's a roadie," you're halfway to figuring out that event. Boonen and Friends is, as tgsgirl says, a time for a few laughs, this time at the expense of roadies like Peter Sagan, Thomas Dekker, Niki Terpstra, Johan Van Summeren, Gianni Meersman, and of course Tommeke himself. Former CX World Champion-turned-roadie Lars Boom usually wins, and probably will again, but that won't be the headline.

Sunday is another colorful day, for an entirely more serious reason. It's UCI World Cup time, just over the border into France, as the city of Roubaix hosts its annual CX event around the famous Paris-Roubaix-ending velodrome. That alone feels like a story, invoking some of the most famous terrain in road cycling history, and that which is universally associated with a long, painful day in the saddle. In reality, it's an urban course by any standard and doesn't come within several city blocks of a cobblestone, but it has enough tricks up its sleeve to make for a good event.

tgsgirl's take:

The Roubaix world cup race returns to us after a brief abscence of a few years, with the last edition being held in 2010. It replaces Igorre, which will make Albertina cry but which the rest of us won't mind so much because Igorre wasn't very interesting. Roubaix is fun because A: it loop-de-loops around the - new! - velodrome and even finishes on it, which reminds me of PR, which always good, and B: it has some very cool descents. Especially if it's muddy, which is when things get really fun. So I think we're best of hoping it rains.

Here's your map:

The fun stuff is on the right side of the map. The velodrome is dug down a bit and surrounded by a few meters of hill, which isn't easily climbed straight on. The video below (from an especially muddy affair -- yay!) plays this out.

Not sure where that staircase is, but I am confident it's still part of the course.

Cyclingnews has a startlist up. On the men's side, the most interesting development is the arrival of Jeremy Powers for a turn with the big boys. With the US hosting the worlds and this being a roughly analogous course (compared to, say, Koksijde), this will be a very intriguing test for Powers. If he can keep up with Sven, Niels, Klaas and Kevin in France, there's a decent chance he can do at least that back home. It's also one of the less selective events, until it turns into a swamp anyway, so that could give Lars van der Haar and some of the other speed merchants a window of opportunity. It being the UCI circuit, there's a fully international crew on hand, guys like Franzoi, Mouray, Page, Walsleben, a few wandering Scandinavians, and Ian Field, of course.

On the women's side, it's simply all hands on deck: Compton, Wyman, Harris, Dombroski, Cant, Van Paassen, Kupfernagel, and so on. Oh, and the husband-wife duo of Steve Chainel and Lucie Chainel-Lefevre, which is another slice of awesome. Please say they plan to have kids...

This is the race of the season: welcome to an epic (yet short) afternoon of sandy fun.

Type: SAND
Previous podium: Nys, Pauwels, Aernouts (cup) / Albert, Peeters, Pauwels (champs)
TV: Sporza

Koksijde is THE race of the season. It's like RVV and TdF and the Giro and PR and espresso all rolled into one. Koksijde is a coastal town, and the race is on the beach (well technically it's in the dunes) which is great. Have you ever tried to ride a bike in sand? I haven't, but that's mostly because I don't own a straight-jacket. In the world cup last year, there was polemica in the Nys-Pauwels sprint, with Pauwels (and Fientje) pointing fingers at Nys; and at the world champs later in the year the entire Belgian seven men strong team placed one to seven. Because we're just that good. Koksijde: awesomesauce.

Kevin Pauwels holds the leader's jersey as round two of the Czech World Cup events hits Plzen

Next up... a slightly more interesting grassy circuit around a Czech park! Plzen (rhymes with thrllzen and spllzen) (and generously gave the world Pilsener beer) is the rich stepchild of the Czech double, coming after last weekend's Tabor race, and while it's still a fast and not especially daunting parcours, it's got some fun features. First, there are some hills, which don't mean much in good weather, but add in enough inches of rain (and yards of pilsener)and you've got a party. And then there's the giant ramp. It's a tad gimmicky, but they put a couple S-turns before it (or have), which means you come into it with little speed. Translation: you're going to burn a match or two each lap getting up that thing. Frankly, I would be worried about making it, but that's why I am nowhere near the world of real crossers.

Last year Sven Nys outfoxed Zdenek Stybar (2010 winner here) and Kevin Pauwels, who has never won on this course. Niels Albert is a former winner here too. So I guess it favors everyone but Pauwels. The forecast calls for rain tomorrow, nothing much on Sunday, so unless it really pours, we could see another fast course.

Anyway, here's tgsgirl's take:

28: Plzen (WC)

Type: meadow. staircase. possibility of snow

Previous podium: Nys, Pauwels, Stybar

TV: Sporza, 15h

Now that we're in the Czech Republic anyway, why don't we hang around for a while? Plzen and Tabor are pretty alike, and Tabor is probably the more interesting of the too. Let's hope it snows - snow races rock. Last year, the UCI jury made a bit of a mess of things by having people lounging about on the startline, very much hindering part of the peloton including Niels Albert, and then pretending nothing happened by not stopping the race and not calling for a restart. Please don't sue me Pat. I don't have any money.

Forget the timing chips, forget the Jupiler... it's Patrick Safety Joggers and White Leader's Jerseys at the UCI World Cup of Cyclocross!

Come one, come all! The UCI World Cup races are arguably the most prestigious set of events on the calendar, bringing in the biggest international field and heading outside the borders of Flanders (occasionally) to celebrate the sport with 'Cross fans in Spain, France, the Czech Republic and Italy. Netherlands too, although with the Superprestige crossing the border Dutch cross is less of a novelty than, say, racing outside of Rome. The nature of the series is varied, from the mellow Czech courses to the madness of Koksijde
